Reachy Mini: The dev community's desk companion of record

What it is

Reachy Mini is an eleven-inch desk robot that consists, essentially, of a head that has opinions. Built by Pollen Robotics under Hugging Face, it carries a camera, a six-degree-of-freedom neck, and two antennas that do more emotional work per millimeter than any component in this registry. $299 tethers it to your computer (Lite); $449 gives it a battery and an onboard Raspberry Pi 5 (Wireless). Everything — SDK, behaviors, the app ecosystem — is open source.

Observed behavior

The species communicates exclusively through posture: a head tilt for attention, a slow antenna droop for what owners consistently interpret as disappointment. This is a design constraint functioning as a personality. Community apps shared through the Hugging Face Hub extend the repertoire weekly — face tracking, conversation modes wired to whatever model the owner prefers, one widely-shared behavior that simply watches you work, which owners describe as either companionable or unsettling depending on the deadline.

Tens of thousands of preorders and a year of batch shipments mean the field population is large; the owner record is correspondingly rich. Assembly is part of the ritual — plan an evening, and note that the community rates the build documentation highly.

Living with it

This is the registry’s reference open desk companion for a reason: no subscription, no cloud dependency, a Python SDK the community actually exercises, and a maker (backed by Hugging Face) whose survival odds rate as well as anything in this category. The limits: it does not move from where you put it, its expressiveness is its whole act, and a household expecting a pet will find it more of a colleague. The developer-platform score carries much of this specimen’s weight — for a programmer, it is the lowest-friction embodied AI project currently sold; for everyone else, it is a very charming paperweight with excellent posture.
